We are offering a position at the Laboratory for Experimental Oncology (LEXOR) in collaboration with the Department of Medical Oncology at the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam. Recent work from our group has established that therapeutic pressure results in epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in esophageal cancer, and that this drives resistance to therapy. Given that therapy resistance is an enormous hurdle to the effective treatment of esophageal cancer, this project offers an opportunity to improve outcome of this devastating malignancy.
The PhD candidate will elucidate the mechanisms that drive this resistance and develop markers that predict its occurrence in patients. Our group has established a unique set of patient-derived models and archived material that will allow cutting-edge experimental work. This will include in vitro and in vivo tumor experiments, bioinformatics, and the analysis of patient material including blood and tissue samples and clinical data.
For this position, the candidate should hold a Master’s degree in biology, medical biology, medicine, or a related field. The candidate is preferably experienced in cell culture, bioinformatics, mouse experiments, and preferably communication with patients. A keen interest in cell biology and next-generation sequencing is preferred, as is a can-do mentality, ambition, and team player spirit.
You will be offered an employment contract for a period of 1 year at the AMC. You will be employed by AMC Medical Research BV.
The salary is in accordance with the UMC-CAO. The AMC is more than just a hospital. It is a world in which patient care, research and education are integrated, and in which people are always central. It is an academic world full of possibilities for talented individuals that are looking for a place where they can excel. Thinking big, daring to dream, cooperating internationally. And never letting yourself be put off by ‘It’s not possible’ or ’It won’t work anyway’. That is the AMC mentality.
The Laboratory for Experimental Oncology (LEXOR) is part of the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam (AMC). The AMC has a very strong track record in gastrointestinal research and offers a unique environment for ambitious PhD candidates to perform research in.
LEXOR is a vibrant laboratory that hosts approximately 30 PhD students and post-docs with diverse backgrounds (biomedical, physics, bioinformatics). Research focuses on cancers of the digestive tract (i.e. colorectal, pancreatic and esophageal) and has yielded numerous high-impact papers in recent years.
PhD candidates at the AMC are embedded in the Oncology Graduate School Amsterdam (OOA) and are offered a custom training- and guidance plan that aids in education, research, writing, and personal development.
