Viral respiratory tract infections are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite the significant impact of respiratory viruses on global health and global economy, surprisingly little is known about the transmission routes of respiratory viruses and determinants thereof. Influenza viruses are known to be transmissible between individuals via the air via aerosols or respiratory droplets. In your project, you will use novel in-house developed quantitative experimental systems to investigate influenza virus stability in the air. By using the so-called reverse genetics system you will generate recombinant mutant influenza viruses with different phenotypic properties, to study which virus properties contribute to increased stability in the air. Furthermore, you will study how this stability is affected by environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. This research will increase our knowledge about the exact routes and mechanisms of virus transmission and will help to identify risks and design prevention and intervention strategies.
