Whereas navigation has become standard of care for neurosurgical procedures, navigation in craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery is less common. The recent introduction of mixed reality has further advanced navigation, enabling direct vision of complex structures inside the patient. Such approaches have great potential in (complex) CMF surgery and neurosurgery and may both enable better training and deliver safer surgery. In this project we will develop and evaluate mixed reality navigation for CMF. To the end, we will address the key components required for navigation: patient-to-model alignment and patient tracking, integration of mixed reality (via e.g. the Hololens) in the navigation, and tracking using video-images from the Hololens.
