The health of humans, animals and ecosystems are tightly interlinked and the Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries on earth, both in terms of humans and livestock. We are interested in studying the dynamics of viral infections in the interaction between livestock, humans and environment through the use of next generation metagenomic sequencing and immune response profiling. Therefore, Erasmus MC and the University of Utrecht Veterinary faculty are recruiting two PhD-students to work in a collaborative project assessing the role of the virome in the health of humans living near high density livestock farms. The positions will be placed in the context of the Netherlands Centre for One Health (NCOH).
The PhD-student based at Erasmus MC will focus on virome sequencing and analysis to identify markers for exposure to animals and the excreta, and to search for possible causes of diseases in relation to these exposures. The project plan includes the potential for (immune)-profiling of host responses to potentially relevant viruses found in the metagenomic analysis.
We are seeking a PhD-student that is enthusiastic and highly motivated with a MSc degree or equivalent from an accredited academic program in Biology, Biomedical or Molecular Sciences, Immunology or (Veterinary) Medicine, but with demonstrable experience with next generation sequencing and bioinformatics analyses. We expect the candidate to be involved both in the "wet" lab studies generating new datasets, and in their analysis. Candidates should have an excellent command of the English language, both oral and written and are expected to obtain their PhD in 4 years, with Prof. dr. M.P.G. Koopmans as promotor.
Being able to present a certificate of good conduct, a valid proof of identity, diploma's and/ or relevant registration such as BIG/ RGS are conditions for the appointment.
ConditionsYou will receive a temporary position for 4 years. The gross monthly salary is € 2.279 ,- in the 1st year and increases to € 2.919,- in the 4th year (scale OIO). The terms of employment are according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
