Functieomschrijving

The Department of Molecular Genetics studies the molecular mechanisms of multicomponent biological pathways within the DNA damage response. The project aims to correlate biochemical and biophysical properties of individual molecules within reaction pathways with functional outcome such as DNA damage detection and repair. The project involves building stochastic models and creating analytical solutions for complex reaction pathways in which biophysical parameters obtained from biochemical and cell biological projects within the department serve as input. The obtained predictions will be fitted onto functional data and the models will be trained using machine learning. Insights obtained from this analysis will contribute to formulation of new hypotheses that can subsequently be tested experimentally.

Functie-eisen

You are a highly motivated PhD student with a strong background in simulation of reaction pathways. You are proficient in coding in Python and C++ and have experience with Markov-chain Monte Carlo simulations, continuous time Markov processes and/or analytical solutions as well as machine learning algorithms. You have a fundamental understanding of biological processes and biophysical properties of molecules, can translate reaction pathways into stochastic models and are able to implement new approaches to simulate the complexity of biological redundancy. You will be involved in several projects in close collaboration with biochemists and molecular biologists. Furthermore, a strong command of (scientific) English in speech and writing is essential.

Being able to present a certificate of good conduct, a valid proof of identity, diploma's and/ or relevant registration such as BIG/ RGS are conditions for the appointment.

Conditions

You will receive a temporary position for 4 years. The gross monthly salary is € 2.357 ,- in the 1st year and increases to € 3.020,- in the 4th year (scale OIO). The terms of employment are according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
