We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher (2 years, full-time) in microbubble-mediated drug delivery. Treating cardiovascular disease and cancer using ultrasound-activated vibrating microbubbles (1-10 µm in size) has shown preclinical and clinical potential to boost drug therapy and reduce side-effects because drugs are delivered locally. The unknown underlying mechnism prevents maximum therapeutic outcome and hinders widespread clinical use.
You will be responsible for disentangling the in vivo microbubble - vessel wall - drug interaction 1) spatially (nanometer - cm scale), 2) temporally (nanosecond-hours scale), and 3) mechanistically to maximize therapeutic outcome. Developing novel analysis methods to link the microbubble-cell-drug interaction can be part of the project. For this, you will closely collaborate with researchers investigating the therapeutic use of ultrasound-activated microbubbles. Supervision of students is expected from you.
The BUBBLE QUEST project will result in novel insights into the microbubble-cell-drug interaction for clinical microbubble-mediated treatment. The project is embedded within a recently granted personal Vidi grant from NWO, the Dutch Research Council, to the Principal Investigator Dr. K. Kooiman. The work will be caried out in close collaboration with PhD students and postdocs within the therapeutic utrasound contrast agent group embedded in the Biomedical Engineering group, part of the Department of Cardiology, and with existing national and international collaborators.
Expert knowledge in ultrasound-activated microbubbles for drug delivery. Experience with in vivo experiments and/or high-speed cameras is highly welcome. Candidates are expected to have a PhD in a relevant field, such as biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical technology or related, and preferably have experience in interdisciplinary projects. You have a can-do attitude, experience with microscopes, a creative and pro-active attitude with good analytical skills, the ability to combine creativity with a sound academic attitude, excellent communication skills in English, both in writing and speaking, and are a good team player. The research project should result in scientific publications and conference presentations.
ConditionsThe gross monthly salary amounts a maximum of € 4.615,- scale 10), depending on your level of education and relevant experience and based on a full-time working week of 36 hours. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
