We expect from the new associate professor to have a broad interest in and knowledge of the domain of Law and Economics and to have evident insights in the various specializations within Law and Economics (like Empirical Legal Studies, Public Choice, European Integration or Corporate Governance) in order to be able to liaise with colleagues at the institute. We expect the candidate to develop an important international networking function.



The associate professor is expected to play an active role in fulfilling the teaching obligations of the RILE on the Bachelor, Master and PhD-level. The teaching activities are embedded within the regular curriculum of ESL as well as the EMLE and the EDLE. 

The specific teaching obligations will be further discussed with potential candidates, but will in any case encompass teaching in the EMLE. It is expected that the associate professor can fulfil that task in an appropriate and insightful way. Teaching in the EMLE and EDLE is in English; in the regular curriculum of ESL teaching is possible in Dutch or in English. It is expected that candidates can prove teaching qualifications by appropriate documents (teaching evaluations etc.)



The candidate is expected to contribute substantially to the policy orientated research of RILE. It is considered important that the research of the candidate is not only of a high level, published in internationally renowned refereed journals, but also of interest to both lawyers and economists.

From the associate professor it is expected that she or he is able to apply for research grants (for example NWO, Erasmus plus etc.). A proven track record of research grants is an advantage. Successful grant applications will be a criterion for granting tenure.



It is expected that the associate professor takes part in the diverse management tasks of the RILE, EDLE and occasionally within the faculty. This comprises the organization of teaching activities, the organization of research activities, for example in the BACT, or other research excellence programs at the faculty level. It is taken into account that the successful candidate has a temporary position. Therefore, the workload of management tasks will be reasonable.


We are looking for a candidate for a fulltime position who corresponds to the following requirements:

  • The candidate possesses a PhD with a clear connection to Law and Economics or a related discipline;

  • The basic education has to be preferably in law. If law is not the basic qualification it has to be shown that the candidate has an excellent understanding of law;

  • Candidates should have preferably a second master in another domain, with preference for economics, but social sciences or psychology would be accepted as well. There should be a proven track record to conduct interdisciplinary research;

  • The candidate has excellent didactical skills and is able to teach for larger groups of law students as well as for specialized smaller groups of (foreign) students who specialize in the economic analysis of law;

  • The candidate has a track record in Law and Economics through national and international publications in peer reviewed journals;

  • The candidate has excellent social skills;

  • The candidate has preferably a proven track record of acquiring external research funding.


A position as associate professor with the possibility of tenure in a vibrant research environment with ample opportunities to further develop as a top-researcher.

The start of the tenure track, i.e. after having been appointed as associate professor, includes the composition of a development plan by the associate professor. In the development plan the candidate elaborates what activities will be undertaken and what results are expected to be reached, with the ultimate aim to qualify as full professor. The tenure track is expected to take 5 years. Assessment criteria are good teaching evaluations, publishing in high ranked journals and being successful in getting research grants.

The monthly salary of the associate professor is € 5,039 minimum and € 6,738 maximum gross per month for a full time position of 38 hours a week (scale 13 or 14).
