The professor will lead the Digital Life Centre, a research group at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industries. This group carries out research at the intersection of the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and design, with public well-being and health in urban contexts as its application areas. The focus is on innovative and creative technologies, digital information in everyday life and an understanding of the bigger data picture. Digital Life conducts its research in living lab settings (Amsterdam area) together with users and in close collaboration with the professional field, the industry and educational programmes. Examples of Digital Life research projects can be found online at www.digitallifecentre.nl.
In the field of health and well-being, the interest in and the impact of ICT and the creative industries is rapidly increasing. Examples of current challenges are the development of persuasive technology for behavioural interventions, the application of sensor technology for accurate continuous measuring or the use of big data which are generated by these sensor systems to design personalised solutions. These challenges require digital and design skills, as well as implementation and evaluation together with the end-users.
The professor sets the research agenda of the group and leads the multidisciplinary team of researchers (with backgrounds varying from computer science and design to the humanities). He or she collaborates with fellow professors both within AUAS and at other universities in the Netherlands and internationally in order to contribute to the research portfolio of the faculty. The research output is published in academic and professional publications, also feeding into the educational programmes at the faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industries.
The professor has a background in information technology, artificial intelligence or digital design. He or she holds a PhD degree in an area that is relevant to the research theme and has a proven international academic track record, supported by a publication list and/or design portfolio. In addition, he or she has an international network and is recognised as an authority in the field. The professor also has the skills to represent the broader research community at the faculty.
The professor must have a strong vision of applied research in an educational context. He or she is able to identify the interests of potential educational and professional partners. The professor is able to involve and inspire students and lecturers at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level in research projects. Working closely with the HBO-ICT management team and being involved with other AUAS programmes in design and health, the professor actively contributes ideas on how to integrate research and new knowledge into the educational programmes. The professor uses various skills to motivate the research group. He or she is able to inspire and lead through a positive attitude.
The professor has experience with the acquisition of research funding and the related administration. He or she has an interesting network to channel and advance the impact of research activities in the professional field as well as in academia.
This position is initially temporary, with the possibility of a permanent contract upon satisfactory performance. The activities meet the job description classification for Professor 2 (Lector 2), with the possibility of advancing to Professor 1 in future. This position of Professor 2 comes under pay scale 15 (CAO HBO, collective labour agreement for universities of applied sciences). The gross monthly salary is a maximum of €6940,- for a full-time appointment, depending on the candidate’s education and experience.
