Description of the project:
There is urgent need for an alternative, sustainable, efficient protein production chain. We will initiate a marine, efficient, sustainable low trophic aquaculture (LTA) chain, based on biomass from combined seaweed-mussel cultivation. Social innovation and creation of value along the protein production chain form the key goals of the project. They are supported by breakthroughs in the natural sciences, such as selective breeding of sterile seaweeds, innovative biorefinery of seaweed biomass and insight in the carrying capacity of the natural marine ecosystem. The knowledge and skills gained will be integrated in the FS2S learning community that will ensure the LTA continuity.
The aim of the PhD student project within FS2S is to identify fungal strains that efficiently break down seaweed cell walls, without degrading the protein content, and optimize these strains using non-GMO methodology. Bioreactor cultivations of the best strain and subsequent testing of the produces enzyme cocktail will be performed in collaboration with WUR-WFBR using their facilities.
The highly motivated candidates should have an MSc degree, excellent communication and social skills, a team-player attitude and affinity with fungal physiology and/or biotechnology. Knowledge of standard molecular laboratory techniques such as gDNA isolation, PCR, cloning and sequencing as well as a basic understanding of biochemistry is required. Experience with bioinformatics and fungal biology is appreciated.
According to “CAO-Nederlandse Universiteiten” (CAO-NU) € 2.443,- in the first year, increasing to € 3.122,- in the fourth year, excluding 8% holiday allowance and an 8,3% year-end bonus. We offer an extensive package of fringe benefits.
Initially one year with a potential extension.
