Lamers Laboratory LUMC is looking for a PhD student!
We are looking for a PhD student to join the Lamers laboratory. Our research focuses on two closely related essential cellular processes: DNA replication and translesion DNA synthesis, with the aim to create a complete and detailed description of all the steps in these processes. Your task will be to study different protein-DNA complexes by single particle cryo electron microscopy, protein crystallography, or biochemical/biophysical methods.
To study DNA replication and translesion DNA synthesis, we use cryo-EM, protein crystallography, single molecule light microscopy and biochemistry. In previous studies, we have determined multiple structures of different protein-DNA complexes (Lamers 2006, Fernandez-Leiro 2015 & 2017). We have furthermore discovered a novel DNA proofreader in the replicative DNA polymerase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Rock 2015) and determined its crystal structure (manuscript accepted). In addition, we have used single molecule light microscopy to monitor the sequential action of the different protein during DNA replication and translesion synthesis (manuscript under review).
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated colleague who recently obtained a master's degree. You should have knowledge of biochemistry and structural biology and a drive to answer important and fundamental biomedical questions. A background in DNA replication and/or DNA repair is helpful but not essential.
You will be employed on the basis of a 36-hour week. Appointment should lead to a PhD thesis and is for a maximum duration of four years. Your salary will depend on your qualifications and experience, with a maximum of € 2,266 gross per month in the first year ascending to € 2,903 in the fourth year (scale PhD, CLA UMC). By joining us, you will be part of a young and dynamic team consisting of international researchers.
The terms of employment offered by the LUMC are highly favourable. For example, you will receive 8% holiday remuneration, a year-end bonus, and a pension arrangement with the National Civil Pension Fund. Also, as employee of one of the University Hospitals in the Netherlands, you can benefit from our collective health insurance policy. Moreover, the LUMC offers excellent facilities in the area of education, child-care centres, and career advice.
If you have any questions, or if you want more information about this position, please contact Mr M.H. Lamers, associate professor, department of Molecular Cell Biology, telephone +31 (0)71 526 87 27.
For this position references will be checked, please ad the contact information of two references to your application. Giving a presentation and an assessment are part of the selection procedure.
The LUMC is a center for medical innovation that aims to improve patient care through leading international research. So as to also provide our patients with a safe and friendly environment, we need doctors, medical care specialists, support staff and academic researchers. Our research fits seamlessly into and communicates with other research that takes part at different departments of the LUMC.
The Lamers group is also part of a pan-European consortium in which different research groups study DNA mismatch repair and transcription coupled repair (see www.dnarepairman.eu). Finally, the LUMC has the most advanced equipment for molecular biology research and cryo-EM studies and is closely associated with the Netherland Center for Cryo-Electron Nanospectroscopy (NeCEN) that is equipped with two Titan Krios microscopes.
