To study the microbial (meta)genomics/metatranscriptomics of tropical sponges.
The postdoc position will be part of research led by Prof. Dr. Nicole de Voogd (Naturalis Biodiversity Center and Leiden University) where she investigates microbial communities of sponges in different ecosystems with varying environmental parameters. The aim of this postdoc is to characterize and understand the functional diversity of microbial communities in sponge species that occur in a variety of habitats, such as submarine caves, coral reefs and the deep sea in the Indo-Pacific region.
The successful candidate should have a strong track-record in doing independent research in the field of metagenomics, bioinformatics and phylogenomics. S/he has a general interest in marine invertebrates and symbioses, ideally with an affinity to sponges and an experience with scientific diving and willingness to do fieldwork is a pre, but not a prerequisite. It is expected that s/he will devote the final year to the acquisition of external funding, for example within the VENI/VIDI/VICI Talent programme of the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO). We require an excellent level of written and oral English, well-developed communication and presentation skills, and the ability to engage with the Dutch audience.
A contract (36 hours per week) for a period of one year, to be extended with one-two more years after a successful first year evaluation, and a monthly gross salary of € 3.099,- and € 3.620,- depending on relevant experience. The successful candidate will be employed by Naturalis in Leiden. Naturalis Biodiversity Center offers an inspiring working atmosphere. Our Research Coordination Office also provides ample support to our scientific staff. Our institute promotes gender equality and wants to enhance the diversity of staff members. Feel free to contact Prof. Dr. Nicole de Voogd with questions about the position: Nicole.devoogd@naturalis.nl.
