In this PhD project we aim a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in immunotherapy-related toxicity, with a focus on T-cell behavior. We will conduct a clinical study with translational research. We will use several innovative technologies in the domains of imaging, immunology, genomics, and pathology to obtain in-depth insights in the factors underlying the early development of immunotherapy-related toxicities. Will you join our team?

Immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as anti-programmed cell death-1 (PD-1), anti-programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1), and anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4), have revolutionized the treatment of cancer in the past decades. Immune therapy resulted in overall survival benefit for patients with advanced stage cancer, and have become standard of care in several cancer types.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors release the brake of the immune system during priming of naive T-cells and during reactivation of memory anti-cancer T-cell responses. However, this systemic activation of immune cells and induction of potentially self-reactive T-cells also leads to off-target activity, so-called immunotherapy-related toxicity. Combined treatment with anti-CTLA-4 and anti-PD-1 antibodies leads to severe toxicity in more than half of the patients.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • Coordinate and control our site-specific immunotherapy-related toxicity trial (planning of study activities and to obtain biopsy material, blood, stool samples, etc).
  • Acquire knowledge of PET imaging and perform quantitative analyses.
  • Acquire knowledge of diverse laboratory techniques, including multi-dimensional flowcytometry and multi-colour immunohistochemistry, and perform quantitative analyses.
  • Actively participate in multi-disciplinary scientific meetings (laboratory meetings).

We are looking for a motivated medical doctor or technical physician with affinity with immunology and medical imaging. You have a master degree in Medicine or Technical Medicine with special interest in translational research or you have a master degree in Biomedical sciences or equivalent with interest and experience in clinical studies.

You have some experience with immunological, cell biological and/or molecular biology techniques is an advantage. You will work in patient care, plan study-related activities, analyse PET imaging data, work with patient material, provide support in the logistics of the sample acquisition, and ultimately perform translational research in a highly motivated team of researchers.

In addition you possess the profile below:

  • Ambitious.
  • A strong team player.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • A high level of proficiency in English.
  • Able to work both independently and in a team.
  • A strong interest in translational research.

The salary depends on education. Scale 10 will be offered to MSc medical graduates; those holding degrees in other disciplines will be offered scale 10A.
