Functieomschrijving

Insects are vectors for transmission of important human pathogens, such as Dengue virus, Zika virus and Chikungunya virus. Insects lack the adaptive immune responses of vertebrates, yet they effectively fight viral infections. Within the insect host, viruses encounter a sophisticated and complex antiviral immune response that is based on small RNAs and inducible responses. Host responses that are induced by conserved signalling pathways such as NF-kappa B and heat shock responses are not well understood.
The power and ease of Drosophila genetics (fruit fly) has been instrumental for the identification and characterization of novel immune mechanisms.

For an ERC Consolidator Grant-funded project, we are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist to study inducible antiviral responses in Drosophila and identify mechanisms by which viruses suppress these responses. This project will complement ongoing work in the laboratory on interactions between arthropod-borne viruses and their mosquito vectors.
