In combination with the chair groups of landscape history and art history, the chair group architectural and urban history forms the Department of History of Art, Architecture and Landscape (HAAL), which is part of a Cluster that also accommodates the Departments of Arts, Culture and Media, and Media studies. The chair of architectural and urban history uniquely combines the history of the visual arts, urbanism, architectural history and landscapes, and examines the relationships between these domains. Within this setting, it positions classical, object-based history and theory as the basis for addressing contemporary issues, notably in cultural heritage and issues related to the health impacts of architecture, urbanism and public health; the chair group hosts the Expertise Center Architecture, Urbanism and Health, a joint venture of the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, and the University Medical Center of Groningen.
The department of HAAL is seeking an Assistant Professor, the position combines teaching (60%) and research (40%). Research is conducted within the Groningen Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG) and its Research Centre Arts in Society
• shares the concept underlying the work of the section of history of art, architecture and urbanism, and sees knowledge of the past as crucial for the evolution of architecture and urbanism today
• has in-depth knowledge of the architectural and urban history of Europe, preferably including Eastern Europe, from the Middle Ages until the present time
• knows the professional vocabulary of architecture and urbanism in English and Dutch, and knows the ways architecture and urbanism is represented (different types of drawings, maps, etc.), and has the skill to teach these issues (theoretically as well as on site)
• knows how to link architectural and urban history to landscape history and art history, and is willing to teach classes in these sections
• has the capacity to connect architectural and urban history to current practices (including, but not limited to, visits to cultural heritage professionals, monument preservation offices, architectural firms, municipal planning offices, management professionals working in spatial planning and related fields)
• is willing to work with professionals from other Departments and Faculties, notably the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies (which shares the responsibility for a joint minor program), and the participants in the Expertise Center Architecture, Urbanism and Health: the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, and the University Medical Center of Groningen
• knows, within this context, how to continue work in his/her own distinctive field.
The candidate will:
• carry out research, generate peer reviewed output in accordance with the set standards, write grant proposals, and contribute to ongoing research projects
• co-supervise PhD candidates
• teach undergraduate and graduate courses
• supervise BA and MA theses
• prepare and accompany excursions in the Netherlands and abroad
• perform relevant administrative tasks.
In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communication skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results-oriented attitude, we are looking for candidates who have:
• PhD in the field of architectural and urban history and theory, or currently in the final stages of finishing a PhD (defense within half a year from now)
• strong research profile and publication record appropriate to career stage
• record of high-quality teaching appropriate to career stage
• willingness to apply for relevant research grants
• some experience with administrative duties and/or departmental service and/or professional service is welcomed
• excellent command of English
• for non-native speakers of Dutch: working knowledge of Dutch (B2) within 3 years after appointment.
• has reached the requirements of the University Teaching Qualification (BKO), or is willing to meet these requirements within two years.
ConditionsWe offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
- a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 3,807 (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 5,992 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position.
- 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. The position entails a contract combining 60% teaching tasks with 40% research-time.
- favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
The faculty will facilitate you with obtaining the requested qualifications for teaching and the Dutch language within two years.
The appointment will initially be on a temporary basis for 18 months with the possibility of becoming a permanent position following a positive ‘Results and Development’ assessment.
