Functieomschrijving

We have a vacancy for a candidate to follow double PhD degree hosted by the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) and the University of Leon (Spain). The selected candidate will work on the European project called 4NSEEK to develop intelligent image retrieval tools which assist legal enforcement agencies during forensic investigations. Being part of a cutting-edge research programme, the selected candidate will receive excellent training in the form of hands-on instruction, advanced courses and summer/winterschools, complemented by workshops on generic research and transferable skills. As a PhD candidate, you are committed to conduct independent and original scientific research, to report on this research in international publications and conference presentations, and to describe the results of the research in a PhD dissertation, to be completed within 3 years. The candidate will spend at least one year living in Groningen, and at least one year living in Leon.

The position is embedded in the following research groups:
University of Groningen: research group for Information Systems, supervisor: Dr George Azzopardi (www.cs.rug.nl/~george/)
University of Leon: research group for Vision and Intelligent Systems, supervisor: Prof. Enrique Alegre.

Functie-eisen

Successful candidates will have completed a master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering or another field of science relevant for the position. They have good command of English (oral and written), are enthusiastic and have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team, have a passion for science, are highly motivated to work in pattern recognition, data science and information systems while possessing excellent communication skills and an affinity for writing scientific papers and delivering presentations. Medium-high level of programming experience in Python or C++ is also required.

Conditions

In accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, the University of Groningen offers a salary of € 2,325 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2,835 gross per month, based on a full-time position (1.0 FTE). This is excluding a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income and a 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance. The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another two years. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next two years is to be expected.

For the first 15 months the PhD candidate will be paid with the salary mentioned above from the University of Groningen, while for the remaining 21 months the candidate will be paid a competitive salary from the University of Leon. For the University of Groningen, the selected candidate will participate in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering training programme for PhD students and will draw up a personal training and supervision plan together with his or her supervisors. The Graduate School also provides a progress monitoring scheme to ensure an efficient PhD trajectory resulting in a PhD thesis within 3 years. A Career Perspectives curriculum is part of the training, which aims to prepare students for their (academic or non-academic) careers after the PhD trajectory.
