Functieomschrijving

Symmetry breaking at interfaces between dissimilar materials is known to produce fascinating emergent behaviour, offering numerous possibilities for its utilization in future applications like electronics or sensors. In the present project, we will explore 2D materials and their Van der Waals heterostructures. The 2D materials as well as their heterostructures will be grown and fabricated via both mechanical exfoliation and chemical vapour deposition. In particular, the combination of conducting (e.g. graphene) with either semiconducting (e.g. transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) like MoS2 or WSe2) or insulating (e.g. hBN) 2D materials will be investigated. It is the aim to exploit such materials systems for tuning the electronic as well as the magnetic properties. Investigation of the structural and electronic properties will be done by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, while the magnetic properties will be investigated with magneto-optic Kerr effect, photoluminescence, and 4-probe transport measurements.

Functie-eisen

We are looking for a motivated candidate with:

- a master´s degree in Physics, Material Sciences or Physical Chemistry
- preferably some experimental experience in surface science, ultrahigh vacuum or 2D materials
- a good command of English (orally and written), enthusiasm and a team player
- a passion for science
- excellent communication skills
- the ability to write scientific papers and deliver presentations.

Conditions

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
- a salary of € 2,325 gross per month in the first year to a maximum of € 2,972 gross per month in the final year (salary scale Dutch Universities), based on a full-time position (1.0 FTE)
- an holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
- an 8.3% end-of-the year allowance.

The position offered is for four years. Each successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the contract period is to be expected. A PhD training programme is part of the agreement and the successful candidate will be enrolled in the Graduate School of the Faculty.
