Can subtidal eelgrass be restored in the Dutch Wadden Sea?

The Wadden Sea is a UNESCO world heritage site, renowned for the most extensive intertidal mudflat system in the world. In the ‘Wadden Mosaic’-project, we will empirically test potential conservation and restoration measures to improve subtidal habitat quality and diversity. In this PhD project, you will investigate the potential to restore the historically abundant subtidal eelgrass (Zostera marina) in the Dutch Wadden Sea, which has been heavily altered by human impact over the last century. To determine if the Wadden Sea is suitable for subtidal eelgrass restoration, you will first conduct detailed measurements concerning light availability, currents and waves, sediment stability, resulting in a subtidal seagrass habitat suitability map. As the next step, you will conduct experiments with artificial seagrass to study the importance of self-facilitation (e.g. attenuating of currents and waves, and sediment stabilization by seagrass) for the establishment and survival of seagrass meadows. The final step will be to apply these results in conducting pilot restoration experiments with actual eelgrass plants and/or seeds. In this project, you will also closely collaborate with researcher working on other projects that focus on seagrass (intertidal and subtidal) restoration in the Dutch Wadden Sea and Delta.
