Functieomschrijving

Biological nanopores are an exciting new class of biosensors, which found practical application is in single-molecule DNA sequencing and single-molecule analysis. We have several projects in our laboratory that focus on the design and engineering of nanopores to identify specific features in single-molecules. Three main projects are:

NEW NANOPORES
One of the main limitation of single-molecule analysis with biological nanopore is the lack of nanopores with different size and shape. In this project, the candidate will identify and characterize nanopores with targeted diameter, shape and function.

PROTEIN SEQUENCING
We are part of a consortium that includes researchers from Delft and Wageningen. The candidate will develop, engineer and re-design biological nanopores that will allow the sequence identifications of proteins as they are translocated across a nanopore. This will be the first technology that will be able to identify and sequence proteins at the single-molecule level.

PROTEOMICS
One important step in this project is to move towards real-world sample. In this project, the candidate will use the nanopores available in the laboratory to develop new methods to identify biomarkers linked to disease.

Functie-eisen

This is an interdisciplinary project. The candidate may hold a PhD Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biophysics, Biochemistry or Biotechnology or equivalent.

Expertise in molecular biology (recombinant DNA techniques, protein expression and purification), chemical modification of proteins or peptides will be an advantage, but not a limiting factor.

Conditions

The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience of € 2,709 gross per month up to a maximum of € 4,274 gross per month (salary scale 10 Dutch Universities) for a full-time position. This position is defined according to the UFO function profile 'researcher 4'. The appointment is temporary for a period of two year with the perspective of prolongation with two additional years.
