The succesful candidate will conduct scientific research in the field of train-track interaction centered on the dynamic frictional rolling. The research activities will be focused on the development of numerical and experimental methods, algorithms and tools for in-depth study of the physical phenomena occurring during rolling contact. This should lead to a better understanding of the wheel-rail contact and the underlying fundamental processes such as the frictional behavior, and generation of waves and vibration at the contact. The candidate will also investigate the implications of those processes for degradation of the interface, components and structures, as well as new technologies for detection of the degradations and for control of traction and braking.
The succesful candidate is expected to contribute to the initiation, acquisition, and execution of research projects and to the supervision of PhD and MSc students. Cooperation with other members of the scientific staff and establishing relationships with the relevant industrial parties are important. A significant contribution to teaching at the MSc and BSc levels is also envisaged.
The succesful candidate must have a PhD degree in Railway, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or in another relevant discipline. A good knowledge of frictional rolling contact mechanics and experimental skills is expected. You should be able to demonstrate outstanding research potential and have published in leading international scientific journals. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a good capability in initiation of innovative research programmes and acquisition of funding. Experience in teaching is considered an advantage. You should also be able to demonstrate good teaching skills, organisational and leadership skills and have an open personality. Besides that good communication skills in written and spoken English is a must. Knowledge of Dutch is appreciated but is not a pre-requisit for the employment.
At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive a start-up package and formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
