Today, data lies at the heart of virtually every commercial and scientific innovation. We are witnessing a tremendous increase in the volume of data across all fields, from life sciences (medicine, biology, smart cities for urban planning and transport) to financial services (banking, stock trading, insurance). As data size increases and data quality decreases, there is an unprecedented need for knowledge engineering, data integration and web-scale data management systems and methods. Novel approaches are therefore required to cope with the scale and complexity of data and analysis tasks such as volume, dimensionality, heterogeneity, noise and patterns. To address these challenges, we need to employ new classes of scalable data analytics techniques, including machine learning, and involve humans in the loop.
