The candidate will teach the MSc course on Transport Safety and the BSc course on Ethics and Safety in Maritime Transport. The research will entail the further development of probabilistic models for collision risk and decision trees based on Bayesian and AI techniques, simulation, and optimisation of safety and security measures, incorporating inspection data and expert judgments in all modes of transport.
The candidate is prepared to work in a multidisciplinary environment encompassing engineering sciences, economics, political science, and public administration. There will be intensive contacts with colleagues from the TUD faculties of CEG (sections Transport & Planning and Ports & Waterways), 3mE (sections Marine & Transport Technology and Cognitive Robotics), TPM (section Transport & Logistics), EEMCS (section Cyber Security) and AE (section Air Traffic). The candidate has proven skills in teaching and coaching of Bachelor and Master students. The candidate is well equipped for managerial tasks such as organising international conferences or supporting the editorship of international journals.

The candidate has an excellent track record in the field of safety and security in the transportation sector, as proven by a PhD thesis and relevant scientific publications. Research activities should include technological and economic aspects as well as human factors in the safety and security analysis of transport over road, rail, water, air, and pipelines, including autonomous transport.
We are looking for applicants with
• a PhD degree in engineering or social sciences
• a strong affinity for working on multidisciplinary, sociotechnical quantitative risk models
• a strong track record in working with methods for risk and reliability analysis and the application of these methods to the transportation domain
• experience in research and publications in scientific journals
• ample experience in teaching and coordinating educational activities
• good programming skills
• the ability to acquire research funding
• a BTQ (Basic Teaching Qualification) certificate or the willingness to obtain it
• proficiency in English
• flexibility and readiness to work in teams.
A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position.

The Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM) develops robust models and designs, to solve the complex challenges of today’s networked society. TPM combines insights from the engineering sciences with insights from the humanities and the social sciences.
The Safety and Security Science Group is embedded in the Department of Values, Technology and Innovation and leads the Safety and Security Institute (DSyS) at Delft University of Technology (safety.tudelft.nl). The TU Delft Safety and Security Initiative is the largest university-based programme in the Netherlands. It recognises and exploits the increasing interdependencies of systems, the big data trend, and the blurring lines between private and collective safety and security. An intensive collaboration has therefore developed between the group and the technical faculties of the TU Delft.
To accommodate the increasing research and teaching load, the group seeks an Assistant Professor of Transport Safety. The group's emphasis is on environmental and human threats in socio-technological systems. The research programme focuses on developing safety and security science methodologies from descriptive to creative, from the "after-the-fact" to the anticipatory. Special attention is given to Bayesian Belief Network Modelling for cause-consequence relationships. The staff is growing and consists of 6.7 FTE in various domains including chemical engineering, civil engineering, applied mathematics, computer sciences, and psychology. There is a strong transfer of knowledge and methodologies between these different domains. The group has excellent research and teaching facilities.
