The main road network in the Netherlands faces a heavy burden. Especially in and between urban areas, there is expected to be further growth in traffic demand as a result of spatial and economic developments. If we fail to act, we run the risk of the mobility system becoming obsolete and gridlocked and being unable to make the necessary sustainability improvements and innovations that the system requires. There is an urgent need for a new approach to multi moda network planning and management, focusing on the different ways that traffic demand can be influenced and guided, optimising and redesigning existing networks, taking full advantage of new transport systems and mobility services and adopting a smart multi modal approach to the organisation of traffic, mobility and transport. The following Tenure Track positions is part of a collaboration between Rijkswaterstaat, operator of the Netherlands' main road network and TU Delft, striving for the collaborative development of critical knowledge areas in the field of transport planning and management.
The position focuses on the development of a network infrastructure and organisation for the national trunk road network, in conjunction with the municipal and provincial roads network and network of other modalities. This network structure facilitates the multi modal transport of people and goods at different levels of scale (local, regional, national and international) and focuses on efficiency, reliability and sustainability together with future-proofing with regard to new usage needs, technologies and transport services.
The research and education that you will perform and coordinate will not only lead to new scientific theoretical and methodological insights, but also to innovative real-world applications and adoption in relevant planning and policy processes. You play a visible role in advising on deployment and valorisation of research findings. In addition to traffic and transport data, modelling and simulation approaches your work will also comprise design and engineering.
You will work in the Sustainable and Smart Mobility lab and connect to other labs such as the Electric and Automated Transport lab and to other faculties active in this field, such as the faculty of Architecture (Department Urbanism) and the faculty of Technology, Policy and Management. You will work closely with the Principal Advisor from Rijkswaterstaat in the field of Robust Network Development.
You will contribute to the BSc and MSc education of CEG (firstly, in the Master track Transport & Planning; secondly in the new Master program of CEG currently under development), as well as to the education in the interfacultary Master Transport Infrastructure and Logistics (TIL). These contributions pertain to developing and executing courses, and the supervision of Bachelor and / or Master students. Linked to this, you also contribute to the professional development of specialised advisors at Rijkswaterstaat.
The position is located within the department Transport & Planning (T&P). T&P (with about 130 members) has a strong track record in traffic flow theory, traffic simulation, dynamic traffic management and intelligent transport systems of all transport modes, including railway, pedestrians and urban public transport. A trademark of the department is the use of empirical data, incorporating human factors and advanced modelling tools. For more information, please click here.
You have a PhD in a subject relevant to the position, and a strong affinity with relevant research subjects such traffic and transport data, simulation and modelling. You find inspiration in working with others, both at a scientific level, as well as public authorities and industry. You have published in peer-reviewed, international scientific journals. You have a strong background in quantitative methodologies and modelling. You are able to apply your methodological skills to a range of problems and stakeholders. You have inspiring teaching skills and an excellent command of the English language. You have a good command of the Dutch language and are familiar with Dutch policy and planning culture, or you are able and willing to attain a professional level in these skills within 2 years. You are able and willing to teach to a broader audience of CEG students both at the BSc and the MSc level. You are committed to advise Rijkswaterstaat in your field on a regular base and contribute to the knowledge development of its advisors.
A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.
