As an Assistant/Associate Professor, affiliated to the e-Refinery research programme, your focus will be on the following tasks:
Develop a new research line in the field of the sustainable production of chemicals and fuels through large-scale conversion of renewable electricity into molecular bonds (e-Refinery). The focus will be on innovative theoretical and experimental research on design and control of high power (high current) electrochemical power electronic devices for large scale electrochemical conversion processes. This control has to result in high power quality in electrical networks for powering the electrochemical devices, while on the other hand delivering the highest possible efficiency in the conversion process. Breakthroughs are expected from system integration of the electrochemical devices with sustainable energy generation (wind and solar), advanced real-time control, and methods to increase reliability and availability. Since the e-Refinery activities are organised as a cross-faculty initiative, close cooperation with researchers dealing with Materials, Catalysts, Electrochemistry, Energy Technology & System Engineering, Process and System Integration, as well as Societal Embedding is anticipated and expected.
Education: Contributions to teaching in the BSc Electrical Engineering programme and the MSc Electrical Sustainable Energy programme and Electrical Power Engineering, with a focus on electrical sustainable energy and integration of storage.
Management: Acquisition and management of national and international research projects. Establishing strong collaborations with academic and industrial partners.
Participation in international bodies such as IEEE. A holistic approach, in which design, implementation, deployment, and analysis are integrated, is strongly
desired; we expect the applicant to actively collaborate with other researchers from academia and industry to realise this aim.
About the research programme and the department:
The energy transition has far-stretching implications for chemical companies. e-Refinery at TU Delft enables industry partners to start building the required technology capacity and human capital as soon as possible. Researchers in the e-Refinery initiative focus their research on the electrochemical conversion of sustainable electricity into fuels and chemical building blocks, from the molecular scale to large-scale system integration. Implementing e-Refinery will serve three important challenges that the society is facing: CO2 neutral Fuel, seasonal energy storage and a defossilized chemical industry.
The research in the Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy is inspired by the technical, scientific and societal challenges originating from the transition towards a more sustainable society and focuses on three areas:
- DC Systems, Energy Conversion and Storage (DCE&S)
- Photovoltaic Materials and Devices (PVMD)
- Intelligent Electrical Power Grids (IEPG)
You must have a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering related to power electronics. Overall knowledge and experience with high power, high current power electronics, experimental implementation of sustainable energy systems (solar and wind), real-time control of sustainable energy systems as well as previous work experience in one of these areas, is required.
An excellent academic track record reflected by publications in the leading international journals is required. You should have a demonstrated ability to initiate and direct research projects and to obtain external funding. Experience in teaching and mentoring is considered an advantage. You also have an open personality and good communication skills. Demonstrated ability in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of the Dutch language is an advantage.
A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.
Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.
