The position focuses on air quality and its relation to climate change, using new high spatial resolution satellite remote sensing capabilities. The candidate will initiate innovative satellite remote sensing retrieval techniques using new satellite instrumentation like TROPOMI, as well as exploiting the data for tropospheric research in the air quality and climate domain. The candidate will also work on innovative concepts for new satellite sensors, together with KNMI and related entities.
You will combine classic as well as new retrieval techniques, for example based on machine learning, to exploit the data from current and future satellite instruments. High spatial resolution, high accuracy data products under challenging retrieval conditions, are considered key developments for the future. For the developed of new instrumentation, the focus is on miniaturized spectrometers for small satellites and high-altitude airplanes.
You will work in close collaboration with the full Professor and Associate Professor who are leading this initiative. Both also work at KNMI and are Principal Investigators of the Dutch-initiated OMI and TROPOMI satellite projects, respectively.
You will initiate and manage innovative research projects, attract research funding, and supervise PhD candidates and post-docs. You will contribute to the Bachelor and Master programmes and take an active part in the organisation and management of the Department and Faculty.

He/she is able to conduct research according to international standards, as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed, international journals and a PhD thesis. Additional experience in neighbouring disciplines is an asset.
The applicant has a natural ability to inspire students from the undergraduate to the post-graduate level, and preferably some prior teaching experience.
The applicant should be able to work in a team environment and possess good organisational and communication skills. He/she must be proficient in spoken and written English. International applicants are encouraged to acquire knowledge of Dutch.
At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
