We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic candidate fascinated by granular materials for a fully funded 4-year PhD position.
This PhD project focusses on improving process efficiency of the iron making process by enhanced understanding of handling processes of the raw materials (iron ore, coke) related to the blast furnace. Key aspects include: (1) Establishing a numerical model capturing the material behaviour and specifically segregation of multi component mixtures on global and local detail, (2) Modelling transient and steady state interactions with equipment in various handling steps, (3) Calibration, verification and validation by a combination of simulations and experiments on both a lab and industrial scale.
The developed and validated model will be used to evaluate design and process improvements for optimal charging and as such contribute to improved process efficiency.
This project is in collaboration with Tata Steel and the Materials Innovation Institute (M2i).
More information on the TEL section can be found here.
We are seeking an outstanding PhD candidate who has:
- a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical or Process Engineering or Civil Engineering, preferably with a background in granular materials, powder technology or bulk solids handling or related topics;
- proficiency in English (English certificates will be required, such as IELTS and TOEFL);
- good demonstrable communication and team-working skills;
- knowledge/experience of experimental measurements and data analysis;
- Experience in numerical modelling and analytical/computational tools for particle based systems such as DEM software.
