Automated Fibre Placement (AFP) is one of the methods currently used to automatically produce composite structures. Designers usually assume that the robots can perfectly place the tows in the desired direction. However, in reality the paths the robot follows are not exactly those intended by the designers, and the tows placed down are not all of exactly the same width.

The goal of this work is to study the reasons for the difference between as-designed structures and the as-manufactured structure, and model the differences between them. Possible differences are the gaps and overlaps occurring due to the tow width variations, or the angle deviations due to the path deviations.

Ways to minimise the impact of these difference may also be studied. One can think of minimising the chances of a defect occurring, which is possible since the reasons are known, on critical locations. In the end, this work will be the link between the design and the manufacture of a structure.

We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher with excellent qualifications with a university degree (Master or equivalent) in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related subject.

An affinity to experimental work relating to composite manufacturing, is preferred.

The candidate should have a very good command of English language, in direct communication as well as writing skills and should enjoy working in an interdisciplinary environment.
