PhD Position Nanoplastics Removal for Drinking Water

Media attention to microplastic found in water sources and drinking water is high and the public perceives this emerging contamination as a major health concern. Regulators are pushing for drinking water thresholds of plastic particles but knowledge about the removal in our current installations is limited.
In this project, you will investigate the removal mechanisms of microplastics during sand filtration for drinking water treatment. Sand filters are a basic, low-tech water treatment option used all over the world. Although filtration mechanisms for particles are well understood the high variability of plastic types, shapes and their unknown interaction with natural organic matter and biofilms are a challenge for the characterization, monitoring and our understanding concerning plastic removal. You will design and operate small pilot installations in our laboratory, employ and improve analytical techniques and use models to investigate plastic removal mechanisms. Method development using artificially made plastic tracers will be part of the research. The gained knowledge will be used to give advice on process operation and to improve current installations.
Start-date for this position: January 1st 2022 (or earlier).
For a good candidate you will have the following 'Need-to-haves':
- MSc in Chemical/Process Engineering or MSc related to Water treatment
- Strong background and interest in water treatment technologies
- Independent, self-motivated, curiosity-driven mind, open to communicate and collaborate with peers and partners
- A scientific attitude and analytical skills combined with a hands-on mentality
- Laboratory experience proven by lab courses, internships or other previous work.
- Excellent spoken and written English
and hopefully the following 'Nice-to-haves':
- Experience to design and/or operate small pilot installations proven by previous practical or research projects
- Experience working with microplastics/nanoplastics in a lab environment and/or sampling
- Python programming skills
If your mother language is not English and you do not hold a degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction, you must submit proof of English proficiency from either TOEFL (minimum total score of 100) or IELTS (minimum total score of 7.0). Proof of English language proficiency certificates older than two years are not accepted.
TU Delft offers PhD-candidates a 4-year contract, with an official go/no go progress assessment after one year. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2.434 per month in the first year to € 3.111 in the fourth year.
