The aerospace industry is in a continuous quest for more efficient, lightweight multifunctional structural materials. Thermoplastic composites are becoming increasingly attractive due to their high fracture toughness, their suitability for automated manufacturing processes and joining methods. With increasing requirements on sustainability and end of life, their potential for recycling needs to be exploited.
This project aims to establish a framework for scalable manufacturing of high-performance thermoplastic unidirectional tapes. You will take an active role in the process development and optimization to produce tailored thermoplastic composite tapes. You will develop experimental techniques to identify, predict, and control the process. You will complement these activities by multiscale modelling of associated phenomena (spreading, impregnation). This allows you to achieve intricate control of the microstructure. Being associated with the Aerospace Manufacturing Technologies group, you will closely cooperate with colleagues across the group and the faculty.
You are an enthusiastic personality with excellent qualifications and an academic background in continuous composite manufacturing technologies or polymer processing. You are familiar with industrial-scale processing equipment; you have a passion for scientific detail and an affinity for experimental work complemented by numerical approaches, reflecting in your scientific track record. Good command of English and proven communication, people skills complement your profile. We expect you to be a strong team player and motivated in cooperating within the Aerospace Manufacturing Technologies group, the faculty and TU Delft.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
For international applicants we offer the Coming to Delft Service and Partner Career Advice to assist you with your relocation. An International Children's Centre offers childcare and there is an international primary school.
