The department of Design, Organisation and Strategy (DOS) is looking for a post-doctoral researcher (3 years) to do research on the topic of the value of design for improving consumer response to circular products, such as products made out of recycled materials.
The post doc will (partly) operate in a European consortium (Interreg) with 13 partners from North-West Europe to TRANSFORM single use plastic waste into additive manufacturing (3D printing) and intrusion-extrusion moulding feedstocks and create a new Circular Economy model.
In this project, the post doc will be responsible for investigating consumers’ perceptions and adoption of these new, recycled plastic solutions and how designers and marketers can influence these perceptions via the material, design, and communication of these products. Specifically (s)he will investigate to what extent it should be visually recognisable in the design that a product is made of recycled plastics and explore different types of communications to improve consumer evaluations. The post doc will also explore consumer response to different collection systems for single use plastic waste.
The post doc candidate will be part of the Circular Design lab within the faculty. This lab brings together students and researchers with an interest in circular economy.
We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in design, consumer behavior, psychology, or sustainability, and who has a strong interest in studying the intersections between design, consumer behavior, and sustainability/circular economy. In addition to the research, the post doc will be actively involved in teaching at both the bachelor and master levels at the Industrial Design Engineering Faculty (teaching load of 40%).
The candidate for the post doc position will have the following essential (E) and desirable (D) characteristics:
- has a background in design, consumer behaviour, marketing, psychology, or sustainability/circular economy and has affinity with design-related research (E);
- holds a PhD in a topic on consumer behaviour, design or sustainability/circular economy (E);
- has a track record of conference and journal publications (E);
- has experience with quantitative research methods (E);
- has a collaborative attitude to research (E);
- has experience of working in international collaborations (D);
- brings a designerly approach to problem solving and advocacy for design (D);
- has experience in teaching in higher education (D).
