Functieomschrijving

With the growing demand for greener bio based consumer products, every fraction of biomass should be efficiently used and appropriately modified to obtain the desired properties. Xylans, xylose polymers present in the cell walls of all plants, represent the third most abundant biopolymer on Earth. With appropriate modifications, xylans have outstanding physical and chemical properties, which make them suitable for incorporation in an array of different products, replacing less-sustainable product components. To unleash their full potential, currently unknown enzymes have to be discovered for tailor made modifications of these polymers.

This Postdoc project, which is part of a large Horizon 2020 consortium consisting of 13 partners, will focus on the model based development and optimization of efficient fermentation processes for the production of specific xylan modifying enzymes. Enzyme producing bacterial and yeast strains will be constructed by the project partners. Model based fermentation process design will require lab scale fermentation experiments ((transient)chemostat, accelerostat, fed-batch) to obtain quantitative stoichiometric and kinetic data for model construction. Model based designs will then be implemented on lab scale and further optimized and tested on pilot plant scale in cooperation with the project partners.

Functie-eisen

We seek an outstanding scientist with a strong affinity for both experimental research and mathematical modelling in the field of biochemical engineering with relevant research experience in fermentation process development. We are looking for a candidate with a high level of intellectual and practical creativity and genuine interest in applied research. You have a hands-on mentality, demonstrated ability to work in a strongly multi-disciplinary environment, and you can easily and effectively communicate with scientists from different disciplines. Women are particularly encouraged to apply, as they typically make up a smaller fraction of the applicant pool.

To apply for this position you should

- hold a PhD degree, or approach its completion, in biochemical engineering or a closely related discipline;

- have excellent written and spoken English skills;

- thrive in an international, multidisciplinary and collaborative environment;
