Postdoc on Study of the thermochemical and thermophysical properties of minor actinides bearing fuels for transmutation

One of the challenges with the current fleet of Light Water Reactors is the management of the radioactive waste that is generated, and especially of the long-lived transuranium elements that should be stored for a few 100 thousands years in a deep geological disposal site before they completely decay to acceptable radiotoxicity levels. In this context, the European project PATRICIA (Partitioning and Transmuter Research Initiative in a Collaborative Innovation Action) was recently granted in response to the 2018-2019 EURATOM call. PATRICIA aims at investigating advanced recycling options for the minor actinides (e.g. americium, neptunium, curium), i.e. the so-called partitioning from spent fuel, characterizing minor actinide bearing fuel under irradiation, and developing transmutation systems allowing to greatly reduce the radiotoxicity of the waste. The project also focusses on safety related research to support the licensing process of the accelerator driven transmuter MYRRHA. 26 research centres and universities from 14 EU countries, Switzerland, Korea, Russia and the US are involved in the research.

Our research group will contribute to the modelling of the complex U-Np-Pu-Am-O system minor actinide bearing fuel system through the funding of a Post Doc for 20 months.

To achieve this, the Post Doc candidate will perform a critical review of the sub-systems in the U-Am-Pu-Np-O system to identify key gaps in knowledge and relevant experiments. Experimental work will then be performed at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Karlsruhe (JRC Karlsruhe, https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/about/jrc-site/karlsruhe), including structural studies by X-ray diffraction, microscopy, and thermodynamic studies using calorimetry, laser-flash techniques, and Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry. The collected experimental data will serve as input to develop thermodynamic models of these systems using the CALPHAD method with the Thermocalc and Factsage softwares.

As part of the Post Doc, the candidate will supervise bachelor and master students, and will contribute to some educational activities.

This Post Doc position involves a close collaboration between the Department of Radiation Science and Technology (RST, www.tudelft.nl/rst) of TU Delft and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Karlsruhe (JRC Karlsruhe, https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/about/jrc-site/karlsruhe).

We are looking for an outstanding candidate with a PhD degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Applied Science or a related field. Candidate should have an affinity for multidisciplinary fields of research. Computer skills in modelling are desirable, as well as a hands-on attitude towards experimental work. We expect creativity, flexibility and ability to co-operate within an interdisciplinary research group. Excellent communication skills, including good written and spoken English, as well as the ability to conduct independent scientific work are required. Delft University of Technology is a bilingual organisation; fluency in English is essential.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount on health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

For international applicants we offer the Coming to Delft Service and Partner Career Advice to assist you with your relocation. An International Children's Centre offers childcare and there is an international primary school.
