We seek a talented and ambitious postdoctoral researcher for a challenging research project on the border between synthetic organic chemistry, polymer chemistry and characterization of blockcopolymer assembly. The project aims at the synthesis of blockcopolymer surfactants fitted with functional groups that render them responsive to light or certain chemicals. A major part of the project will be concerned with polymer synthesis and characterization, characterization of their assembly behavior in water, and testing their signal response.
The project is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Eelkema Lab and the group of Dr. Antonia Denkova at the Department of Radiation Science and Technology. This collaboration aims at applying such materials in healthcare and in particular in cancer therapy. Most of the synthetic work will be performed in the Eelkema lab at the Department of Chemical Engineering of Delft University of Technology. Application of the synthesized polymers will be tested at the Denkova lab and with partners at the Erasmus Medical Center.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry and polymer synthesis. You must have practical skills in multi-step organic synthesis, the ability to analyze and optimize reaction processes, and in polymer synthesis and characterization. Desirable practical experience includes (a) NMR, (prep-)HPLC, MS, GPC (b) UV-VIS, fluorescence spectroscopy (c) chromatography. It is essential that you are able to demonstrate competence in these areas, as judged by publications (or papers in press) in high quality peer reviewed journals. Very good spoken and written English is mandatory.
