The Interconnected Resource-aware Intelligent Systems cluster at Eindhoven University of Technology has the following three PhD positions on different aspects of Internet of Things and Edge AI.

PhD position 1: AI-driven Internet of Things (IoT) Security

This position is funded by the INTERSECT project, a large Dutch NWO funded project, bringing major academic and industrial organizations involved in IoT security in the Netherlands together. Within this project, we will investigate potential of combination of data-driven and model-driven approaches to detect and mitigate IoT security threats.

PhD position 2: Explainable AI

This position is funded by the Secur-e-Health project, an ITEA funded project. Within this project, we will investigate methods to make AI models and their results more explainable and interpretable for end-users. Specifically, we will look into which parameters and hidden data patterns have led to output of AI models and how application logic/expert knowledge can increase explainability of these models. This project will focus on medical applications and collaborate closely with hospitals and some Dutch medical universities.

PhD position 3: Edge AI

This position we will investigate light-weight, energy-/data- efficient, and self-learning AI and deep learning techniques for Edge devices. Architectural aspects of edge, fog, and cloud computing as well as distribution of learning task and computation will also be investigated.

The successful candidates are expected to:

  • perform scientific research in the domains described above
  • publish results at high-quality venues
  • collaborate with other group and faculty members
  • collaborate with academic and industrial partners involved in the projects
  • attend project meetings and contribute to deliverables and project outcome
  • assist with educational tasks (e.g. practical/lab assignments, co-supervise Master students)


  • You have a master degree in Computer Science, Data Science, (Applied) Mathematics, Embedded Systems, or a related field
  • You have a strong background in machine learning, and specifically deep learning. You have some knowledge of IoT technology and networks
  • You have good programming skills and experience (C, C++, MATLAB, Python, etc)
  • You have strong analytical and implementation skills
  • You have good communicative skills and are eager to work as part of a research team
  • You are creative and ambitious
  • You have good command of the English language (knowledge of Dutch is not required)


  • A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university with the possibility to present your work at international conferences.
  • A full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months.
  • To develop your teaching skills, you will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.
  • To support you during your PhD and to prepare you for the rest of your career, you will make a Training and Supervision plan and you will have free access to a personal development program for PhD students (PROOF program).
  • A gross monthly salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.
  • Additionally, an annual holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary, plus a year-end allowance of 8.3% of the annual salary.
  • Should you come from abroad and comply with certain conditions, you can make use of the so-called '30% facility', which permits you not to pay tax on 30% of your salary.
  • A broad package of fringe benefits, including an excellent technical infrastructure, moving expenses, and savings schemes.
  • Family-friendly initiatives are in place, such as an international spouse program, and excellent on-campus children day care and sports facilities.
