Position within DDSS research program
The unit USRE is in charge of the Design & Decision Support Systems (DDSS) research program and the assistant professor 'Complex human behaviour and the built environment' will participate in this program. Research and teaching on human behaviour in the built environment demands a multi-disciplinary approach, because it needs to combine theory from planning, geography, management, economics and environmental psychology. Additional complexity comes from the fact that both the user perspective - understanding the needs, preferences and choice behaviour of users of space - and the management perspective - understanding the management of real-estate on city, neighbourhood, portfolio and individual building levels and how decision support tools can improve the transparency of processes and quality of decisions - needs to be included. The REMD (Real Estate Management & Development) chair, embedded in the unit USRE, distinguishes itself from other real estate research groups, by focusing on users' behaviour and development of decision support tools for real estate managers. Therefore, this Assistant Professor position is situated within the REMD chair.

Research activities

She will coordinate and execute scientific research on both the user perspective and the management perspective of built environments. Such research includes both qualitative methods - to identify needs, expectations and reasons behind certain behaviours of both users and managers - and quantitative methods such as advanced spatial analysis and modelling behaviour - to identify mechanisms behind the effect of built environments on people's behaviour and wellbeing. So the assistant professor should have experience in both methodological fields. The assistant professor will actively try to obtain research funding, and preferably have experience in writing research proposals for NWO. Besides valorisation to practice, research results should be communicated in high quality scientific journals in the field of real estate and adjacent disciplines.

Teaching activities

The assistant professor will be responsible for the development of and contribution to courses and projects in the BSc and/or USRE MSc programs in the Department of the Built environment. She will also co-supervise master students and PhD candidates. If not yet in possession, she will work to obtain a BKO (Basic University Teaching Qualification).

Development targets
The assistant professor is expected to publish in leading scientific journals and at international conferences and acquire research funds for PhD students that are enrolled in the DDSS research program. She will participate in international research committees and national committees. DDSS Master Students are mentored and DDSS Master Courses are lectured.

Functie-eisen

The candidate is expected to have research experience and an interest in identifying complex human behaviours (e.g. social and business networks, preferences, experiences and emotions) in relation to the built environment with advanced research techniques (e.g. discrete choice modelling, path analysis, GIS and sensor technology), to provide new insights that can be used for (real state) planning, management, design and policy decisions. These complex models are required to describe social and spatial behaviour in the built environment, which is important to create high-quality living and work environments that meet the current changing demands of users.

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:

A successfully completed academic study in the field of the built environment/real estate (MSc level, recognized in the Netherlands)

A PhD

A strong background in research on complex human behaviours in relation to the built environment

The ability to teach in English and, if applicable, willingness to learn Dutch

The ability to both work independently and in a multidisciplinary (international) team

Experience or interest in using (new) innovative data collection methods (e.g. geotagging or sensor technology)

A Basic University Teaching Qualification (BKO) or a preparedness to gain one in the short term

The ability to supervise PhD students and master-students

Interest and a preparedness to innovate our teaching activities

The ability to be involved in scientific journals editorial boards and review activities

Experience with acquisition of research funding, as shown for example by awarded scholarships or grants.
