Two PhD positions in three-dimensional, multi-perspective ultrasound imaging
Cardiovascular disease is still the no. 1 killer worldwide. Current clinical decision making is often based on geometrical measures that lack reliable predictive value. Functional imaging techniques can aid the clinician in daily decision making. Ultrasound is one of the work horses in the clinic. It is non-invasive, cost effective, and uses no ionizing radiation. US has a high temporal and spatial resolution, which allows for functional measurements, such as strain imaging and elastography. However, the possibilities of US are currently underexploited. As a consequence, US has a limited field-of-view and the resolution and image contrast depend on the direction of the sound, which also results in regional differences in accuracy of functional measurements.
In this project we seek two PhD students and a post-doc to develop a new generation of ultrasound imaging, a novel multi-perspective method for imaging, strain imaging and elastography. In this project, we will focus on the fundamentals of data acquisition and image processing, and their validation. Using a combination of multiple 3-D probes, we will develop advanced imaging schemes, and algorithms for image formation and registration, from both a physics and image analysis perspective. We will perform extensive verification of the new platform in our lab, using in silico and in vitro trials.
We seek two highly motivated students who (soon will) have an MSc-degree in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or mechanical engineering, and who have an interest to develop novel US-based functional imaging and diagnostic methods for heart failure patients and patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms.
The two positions are available within the group of Cardiovascular Biomechanics. You will work as a PhD student in a team with researchers in the MUSE project, Multi-perspective Ultrasound Imaging & Elastography, funded by the European Research Council (ERC) of the EU. You will work with project members not only at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), but also at the Catharina Hospital and Philips Research (both Eindhoven) and several international collaborators

Biomedical Engineering (BME)

Research areas range from Molecular Bioengineering and Molecular Imaging, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering to Biomedical Imaging and Modeling. The department has more than 1000 students and 200 staff members.
Cardiovascular Biomechanics (CVBM)
The group Cardiovascular Biomechanics investigates the human cardiovascular system to find new diagnostic and/or therapeutic methods for cardiovascular disease. Ultrasound is the modality of choice to perform direct functional measurements or a model-based assessment of the cardiovascular system, to enhance diagnosis, clinical decision making and patient or treatment monitoring. This led to the Photoacoustics & Ultrasound Laboratory Eindhoven (PULS/e), which houses everything from prototype to high-end systems, as well as facilities for in vitro and in vivo testing and clinical pilots. The group shares state-of-the-art computational and experimental facilities with the groups of tissue engineering, orthopaedic biomechanics of the department of biomedical engineering, and polymer engineering and metals research of the department of mechanical engineering. We have a solid track record on diagnostic methods that have already found their way to the clinic and have close ties to our clinical and industrial partners.
We are looking for high-level candidates with an MSc degree in biomedical or electrical engineering, physics, or mechanical engineering. You will be employed by Eindhoven University of Technology in the group of Cardiovascular Biomechanics. During the project you will closely collaborate with researchers within the PULS/e lab, CVBM group, Philips Research and clinicians at Catharina Ziekenhuis Eindhoven.
