The Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics group at the Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands, www.phys.tue.nl/psn) has an open PhD student position on nano-opto-electro-mechanical systems.
The propagation of light can be influenced by moving boundaries, for example a mirror. When this motion is actuated electrically, a coupling between charges and electromagnetic fields is realized. By confining light, motion and charges at the nanoscale, their mutual interaction is strongly increased, to the point that the coupling between single electrons, single phonons and single photons may become accessible . This would open the way to a variety of sensors operating at the single quantum level, and to the coherent transfer of quantum information between disparate degrees of freedom, as needed for example to interconnect distant nodes in a quantum network. In this project novel nano-opto-electro-mechanical systems (NOEMS) will be investigated, which are designed to maximize the charge-phonon-photon coupling. They are based on electromechanical photonic crystal cavities recently developed in our group , where both photons and charges can be confined in submicrometer regions, resulting in strong coupling to mechanical motion.
The selected candidate will perform fundamental research at the interface between nanophotonics and optomechanics. He/she will conceive and fabricate integrated NOEMS and characterize their electro-opto-mechanical properties. Specific goals include the investigation of the coupled electro-opto-mechanical dynamics and the demonstration of optical sensing of (single) charges via the mechanics. The project will be supervised by Prof. A. Fiore and will be carried out mainly at TU/e (Eindhoven), in collaboration with the group of Prof. E. Verhagen at AMOLF (Amsterdam). References:
