The Department Electrical Engineering (EE) is one of the nine departments of the Eindhoven University of Technology and provides BSc and MSc programs in Electrical Engineering. The department has nine research groups and has research collaborations with other departments at TU/e as well as with a large number of other universities and companies, both within the Netherlands and internationally. The department has approximately 300 employees and 600 students.

The open position is part of the Impuls program, a strategic cooperation between NXP and TU/e.

Job description
As market penetration of automotive radars increases, performance limitation due to radar-to-radar interference will become a serious problem. Another point of concern is that road users in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) exchange information for increasing traffic safety and for enlarging the road-infrastructure capacity, however current direct short range communication (DSRC) systems do not support the required data rates, and cannot always guarantee reliable transmission of safety messages. Therefore these systems need to be complemented by additional communication modalities. Recently millimeter wave (mmW) radar devices enhanced with communication functionalities (RADCOM systems) have been proposed as a solution. The problem of radar-to-radar interference still remains to be addressed however and this problem becomes more relevant since interference will not only degrade radar performance but also communication performance of RADCOM devices.

The objective of this project is to study and design new medium access strategies for mmW RADCOM systems to enable coordination between road users in order to reduce mutual interference. Such strategies must result in reliable radar performance, possibly distributed, and in reliable communication, also at high mobility. In this way congestion of the road-infrastructure can be avoided and its capacity can be increased.

The proposed approach is expected to facilitate cooperation among sensor of road users to prevent mutual interference and alleviate the congestion problem thus enlarging the capacity of the infrastructure. Patentable technology and standardization process are expected outcomes of this research.

Conditions

We offer a challenging job in an ambitious research group through a fixed-term appointment for a period of 22 months. As an employee of the university you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent employment conditions. The gross salary for a post-doc researcher lies between € 3.255 and € 4.274, depending on experience and knowledge.

Moreover, an 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year allowance is provided annually. Assistance for finding accommodation is available.
