We are looking for a microfluidics enthusiast to work on the implementation of a plug-based microfluidics platform for screening drugs alone and in combinations directly on cells from cancer patient biopsies.
About the project
Although there are many possible cancer treatments available, most cancer patients still have a very poor prognosis. This is because cancer patients have a very different molecular profile, and they respond differently to therapy. We urgently need new approaches to tailor treatment to each patient to improve cancer therapy. Precision medicine aims at rationally assigning the right therapy to each patient and has strong potential to improve cancer treatment.
An interesting approach to precision medicine is based on functional profiling, thus directly measuring the response of the tumor after perturbation with drugs. Due to the limited number of cancer cells that can be retrieved from a biopsy from solid tumors, functional screening is either limited to testing only few combinations, or requires ex vivo culturing of preclinical models (e.g. xenografts or organoids), which are expensive and can change the phenotype of the cells due to clonal selection. Microfluidics, thanks to the small volumes, holds great potential for high-throughput screening also with the limited amount of starting material that can be retrieved from a biopsy.
Role and working environment
We are looking for a microfluidics expert eager to work in an interdisciplinary environment. You will be responsible for the implementation of the microfluidics platform at TU/e. Within the Computational biology group, you will be working with the Systems biology for oncology group (dr. F. Eduati), focused on understanding tumours as complex dynamic systems, and the Synthetic Biology group (dr. ir. T. de Greef) leveraging their expertise in valve-based microfluidics. This research project is embedded in the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS, www.tue.nl/icms), an interdepartmental environment fostering multi-disciplinary research. The project is also in collaboration with the Catharina Hospital and the Dutch Cancer Institute (NKI).

- PhD in biomedical engineering, or a comparable domain.
- Strong experience in microfluidics and interest for cancer biology.
- Ability to conduct high quality academic research, demonstrated for instance by a relevant PhD thesis and/or publication(s).
- Excellent mastering of the English language, good communication and leadership skills. Note that there is no Dutch language requirement.
- Be a team player and able to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary context.
- A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university with the possibility to present your work at international conferences.
