The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher on 'Rheology and microstructure of polymer blends' in the Polymer Technology group in the department of Mechanical Engineering.

Project description

Immiscible polymer blends provide the possibility to generate multifunctional materials without the need to synthesize new polymer types. However, the properties of multiphasic materials not only depend on the material properties but are also largely affected by the microstructure. Most polymers have a complex non-newtonian rheology and are combined at relatively high concentrations of either phase. Thus, the effects of viscoelasticity of the components and hydrodynamic interactions in more concentrated blends should be taken into account when modelling the microstructure development and rheology of such systems. The aim of the present research project is to bridge the knowledge gap between fundamental knowledge of morphology development in dilute or Newtonian-Newtonian polymer blends and the development of realistic polymer blend systems. This will be accomplished by in-situ time-resolved characterization of morphology development by means of rheology on model systems with well-chosen component rheology as well as thin film studies of the drainage between coalescing droplets. The task of the postdoctoral researcher will consist of experimental work combined with extension of analytical models. He/she will also be expected to interact with other researchers in the group to ensure that the obtained results provide input for the development of a numerical framework.


We are looking for a highly talented, motivated and enthusiastic candidate who meets the following requirements:

  • A PhD degree in materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related
  • A strong background in experimental research in the area of rheology of complex materials, experience with polymer blends or emulsions is a plus
  • Sufficient mathematical background to adapt/extend analytical models
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and oral

The research of the group is aimed at bridging the gap between science and technology in the area of polymer processing and design, through the use of experimental and computational tools in the modeling of the full thermo-mechanical history of material (elements) during their formation, processing and final design, to quantitatively predict properties of processed materials. The group has state-of-the-art lab facilities for the characterization of rheological, structural and mechanical properties of materials.
