As Business Developer Energy in the Built Environment, you are the link between the market, government authorities and our specialists in the field of energy performance and circularity for the construction industry. You develop projects and programmes in close collaboration with the market, government and knowledge partners. You are responsible for the entire business development process, from initiation right through to the final contract. As such, you work closely alongside specialists and project leaders from different groups.
As a Senior Business Developer in the Buildings, Infrastructure & Maritime unit, you work on the roadmap for energy in the built environment. The Senior Business Developer Energy in the Built Environment:
- Develops innovative programmes and projects for our clients and enters into contracts that are in line with the TNO strategy.
- Opens doors and maintains long-term relationships and contact with (new) clients and market parties suitable for the chosen strategy.
- Understands the needs of market parties and knows how to communicate these to the relevant expert groups at TNO.
- Builds strategic partnerships with our partners.
- Manages business development projects from start to finish, including contract negotiations.
- Proactively manages the acquisition process for leads: this involves business intelligence, market strategies and market plans, propositions and quotations, particularly in the areas of innovative contract research and consultancy for complex and multidisciplinary R&D issues of clients.
- Proactively manages the TNO in-house acquisition process: this involves collaborating with experts in the field of architecture, engineering, IT and materials science on setting the agenda for issues.
WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?
You are a driven professional with a wide network of contacts in the construction and technology sectors. You have a background in these industries and in sales, as well as an entrepreneurial élan. You are a creative self-starter and a team player. You enjoy inspiring colleagues at a junior or middle management level. Going abroad for work regularly and alone is not an issue for you.
Preferably, you have a degree in energy engineering, construction physics or a comparable subject, along with commercial and business knowledge gained through education and/or experience.
Ideally, you can combine this with at least five years of relevant work experience. You have demonstrable experience in sales/development projects in a complex environment.
You can understand (complex) technical issues in a relatively short space of time and bring together the right people at TNO to come up with a solution (together). Your primary focus is on the customer and the market without losing touch with the internal organisation. You can empathise with clients easily and know how to communicate that to the TNO organisation.

At TNO, we work with a team of professionals on making the built environment more sustainable. Key to this is reducing energy use, closing material cycles and ensuring a more efficient maintenance of buildings and infrastructure to extend their lifespan. In terms of energy in the built environment, we want to be a partner for innovation in the most important challenges facing the market. Our focus is on industrial concepts for renovation and new builds, the development of a new generation of heat pumps, heat storage and ventilation technology. We aren’t doing this alone, but in close collaboration with universities (of applied sciences), and as part of international consortiums in Europe. In addition, we work with the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, municipalities and housing associations, for which we want to find a link between technological development and policy, for instance in the area of energy performance standards and health.
