The position is with the Laboratory of Experimental Ophthalmology of the UMCG in the Netherlands. You will be part of a team of highly motivated and (mostly) young visual neuroscientists who want to solve the problem of how vision enables us to comprehend the enormous complexity of the world around us. Additionally, we want to understand how vision loss – due to retinal or cortical lesions or neurological disorders – interferes with this process. In this way, we aim to contribute to the goal of improving visual rehabilitation or even restoring vision.
Part of your time will be available for you to develop and pursue your own research interests, in line with those of the lab in understanding early vision and cortical plasticity, and developing methods to do so (see: www.visualneuroscience.nl). Part of your time you will be working on the "Promise" project, a collaboration of the UMCG, Royal Dutch Visio, the Donders Institute in Nijmegen, and a spin-off company. In this high impact project, we aim to evaluate and further advance a revolutionary new eye-movement based perimetric screening test for use in diagnostics and rehabilitation of ophthalmic and neurological patients.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will closely collaborate with one or more PhD students, co-supervise (master-) students, contribute to our teaching in perception and neuroscience, and maintain and adhere to lab and institutional protocols, such as ethical guidelines and the data-management plan.
For us, you are an ideal candidate if you:
- have a computational attitude towards doing neuroscience.
- an interest in both applied and fundamental studies.
- have a PhD in a relevant field.
- are experienced in psychophysical and eye-tracking studies.
- have deep knowledge of data analyses and statistics.
- have good programming skills, ideally in Matlab and/or Python.
- have experience in machine learning and neural networks.
- have an academic track record with first author papers.
- can communicate clearly and enthousiastically about your science in English, both verbally and in writing.
- enjoy working in an international environment.
- are a team player who can work with professionals of various backgrounds.
The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. The UMCG can provide you with the vaccination, should it be required for your position.
In case of specific professions a ‘Certificate of Good Conduct’ is required.
ConditionsThe advertised position is for one year, with upon a successful first-year review, an extension up to a maximum of four years. Our ideal starting date is March 1 2020, with some flexibility.
Your salary will be a maximum of €4,481 gross per month (scale 10), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a full-time appointment.
In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay, and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
