Tijdelijk contract / Tijdelijke opdracht

Tinnitus is a very common disorder in which a patient hears sound in the absence of an external source. Severe tinnitus can have a devastating impact on the quality of life. A substantial roadblock in developing an effective treatment for tinnitus is the lack of understanding of the neuropathological mechanisms underlying it. In this project we will investigate whether a dysfunction of GABAergic synaptic inhibition causes tinnitus. Specifically, we will combine two neuroimaging techniques, MR spectroscopy and molecular imaging in PET, to identify the functional neuroanatomy of GABA in tinnitus. These experiments are performed in human subjects. In addition, our partner Prof. Borst in Rotterdam will investigate GABAergic inhibition in a mouse model of tinnitus. Together, these projects should identify the role of a possible dysfunction of GABAergic inhibition in tinnitus, which may be a major step towards developing treatments. The project has been made possible by a ZonMW TOP-grant to Prof. Borst and Prof. Van Dijk.
