Would you like to contribute to crafting and developing better roads in the Netherlands that will be more durable? Are you passionate about high-end technological design? Then, this Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programme may be for you. The PDEng is a 2-year post-Master Degree technological designers programme. This programme at the University of Twente contains an educational part and a design project. For the project, You will work with ASPARi network companies. The educational programme will have an in-depth character with ample attention for professional development and will be partly tailored to the design project. Together with external organisation, you will develop a high-level and creative solution for the given problem.
The asphalt construction process is still mainly carried out without sufficient instruments to monitor key process parameters.. The ASPARi developed Process Quality Improvement (PQi) methodology has successfully been used to map operational behaviour during construction using GPS and other sensors; and provide feedback to operators with the aim of improving process control. PQi measurements have been established for a while as a baseline for the evaluation of the quality of asphalt paving operations. It is a proven method for assessing the homogeneity and consistency of the asphalt construction process. However, the correlation between process and product quality has always been treated as implicit and intuitive. Given that the ultimate goal of the ASPARi network is to improve the quality of the final product, i.e. the asphalt layer, it is of a cardinal importance to explicitly couple the process quality indicators with the product quality indicators to help practitioners better assess the consequences of their operational strategies and decisions on the final quality of the asphalt.
THE MISSION OF THIS DESIGN PROJECT IS TO:
“Couple PQI process quality indicators with pavement quality indicators”
The purpose is to find the correlation between the quality of the asphalt construction process with the quality of the final asphalt layer. To this end, the successful candidate is expected to take on the following tasks:
- Systematically analyse the database of PQi measurements of past ASPARi projects;
- Undertake site visits to perform quality measurements (e.g. visual inspections), together with the contractors, of the current road condition;
- Develop a quality indicator matrix for the process and product in collaboration with the contractors and asset owners;
- Model the correlation between the indicators of process quality and the road quality using data-driven approaches.
During the educational part of the programme, you will receive a customised education package consisting of, among others, courses in decision-support system design, systems engineering & design, sensor development, operations research, statistics, structural equation modelling and supply chain management.
We are searching for the best MSc graduated with a proven affinity with design and multidisciplinary assignments. Besides, you have the ambition and talent to accelerate in finding solutions / crafting designs for complex civil technological issues with a multidisciplinary character. Important professional skills are Dutch and English language skills, communication and social skills, collaboration, initiative and self-reflection. Prior knowledge in road design and construction will be useful to successfully complete the project but can also be part of the educational program. An interview will be part of the selection procedure.
