This PhD project is part of an NWO VICI Grant awarded to Dr. Dennis Schutter and will be performed at the Department of Experimental Psychology, Utrecht University. Studies will be part of the affective cerebellum research programme, which investigates the role of the little brain in emotions and emotional disorders. The VICI will focus on the cerebello-hypothalamic pathway and steroid hormones in anger and aggression.
The PhD project involves a series of non-invasive brain stimulation to examine the cerebellar mechanisms underlying anger and aggression. Main tasks will include designing experimental studies and electric field modelling, recruitment and data, analysis of psychophysiological, behavioural and neuroimaging data, communication of results via publication in scientific journals and presentations at conferences, and collaboration with other lab members working on this project. There will be close collaborations with different disciplines within Utrecht University and other (international) centres.
We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a Master of Science degree in either biomedical science, affective neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, or a related field, and who has a genuine interest in the contributions of the cerebellum in emotions. The candidate should be highly motivated to conduct experimental research, have willingness to work within a larger research group, be interested in standard and advanced data analysis methods, and have excellent writing skills. Experience with non-invasive brain stimulation, psychophysiological measurements, experimental research and programming skills are highly desirable.
