Functieomschrijving

The Innovative Training Network MoSaiQC has 15 open positions for PhD students, here called Early Stage Researchers (ESR). In all positions you will work in leading research groups and industry laboratories on projects at the forefront of a flourishing research field. You will address topics that range from fundamental insights (superradiant lasing, driven-dissipative or long-range interacting quantum systems, cavity QED,...) over crucial breakthroughs (continuous superradiant lasing, accurate frequency standards) to practical solutions (integrated optical clock). The starting point of your ESR project is the development of a module for advanced optical clocks, such as a better laser system, a new atomic source, a modelling tool, etc. (see names of ESR projects below). These modules will be developed by you within a team and then used by you to perform cutting edge research, e.g. developing superradiant or integrated clocks, or understanding the foundations of optical clocks. In this way you will have the chance to make essential contributions to topics that have repercussions ranging from fundamental physics, over astronomy, geology to navigation and cm precision positioning in future 5G cellphone networks. In all positions you will acquire deep knowledge over ultracold quantum gases, optical clocks, precision measurement, quantum many-body physics. While working on the experimental positions you will acquire skills that are useful anywhere in our technological world, such as laser, optics, vacuum technology, electronics, software, data analysis, etc. Working in the theoretical positions you will extend your analytical and numerical toolbox. You will be embedded in a lively network of physicists brimming with ideas and will have half-year stays and visits to other MoSaiQC partners, giving you the opportunity to learn about and contribute to different aspects of clocks and to experience different European cultures. MoSaiQC will assure optimal training through training events, such as a summer school and other network events.​

Requirements for all positions

  • The applicant has to have finished a master degree within the last 4 years prior to recruitment and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree.
  • Candidates must not have lived in or carried out their main activity (work or study) in the hosting country for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment start date.
  • Starting date: before October 2020.
  • For the experimental PhD positions it is highly beneficial if the master thesis has been done in experimental atomic, molecular or optical physics.
