Multimedia Analytics brings together multimedia analysis, machine learning, and information visualization to support users in getting insight in large multimedia collections. Are you the AI / Visual Analytics researcher that can give a boost to multimedia analytics? Can you bring together information visualization and algorithms which can explain their decisions while learning from the user interacting with the collection? And are you eager to teach such concepts to bachelor and master students? If the answer to those questions is yes, you should consider this 50% research / 50% teaching Assistant Professor position in the MultiX (multimedia analytics) group of the Informatics Institute. The MultiX group is a vibrant research group, where fundamental research in multimedia analytics is performed with applications in health, forensics and law enforcement, cultural heritage, urban livability, and social media analysis. The MultiX group is also active in the national Innovation Centre for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI). See for more information the MultiX group.

What are you going to do

You are expected to:

  • perform research in Multimedia Analytics and publish and present the results in international journals and leading conferences;
  • collaborate with other researchers in our Multimedia Analytics (MultiX) group and in the Informatics Institute at large;
  • develop an independent line of research within the MultiX group;
  • attract external funding to develop your research line for example through national funding bodies or with industrial partners in ICAI labs;
  • teach in the bachelor and Master programs in AI, Information Studies and/or data science and to guide students in writing their thesis (total approximately 50% of the position, typically three courses a year);
  • contribute to the organization of the Institute.


What do we require

  • A PhD in Artificial Intelligence, or Computer Science.
  • Excellent research skills, evidenced by a track record of publications in renowned international journals, and contributed and/or invited talks at international conferences/workshops.
  • A strong background, experience and expertise in research in the area of AI / visual analytics.
  • Teaching experience at university level and proven didactic abilities.
  • Some experience with the (co-)supervision of BSc, MSc and/or PhD students.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to contribute to research valorization and to research and teaching outreach activities.
  • The capability of multidisciplinary co-operation.
  • Possession of the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO), or the willingness to acquire this within the first two years.
  • An excellent command of English and Dutch.
  • Non-Dutch speakers are expected to learn Dutch within two years by passing the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language (NT2), programme II.

We will base our selection on your scientific track record and on your vision for future research and funding, as well as on your teaching achievements, qualifications, and vision for future teaching.


Our offer

A temporary contract for 32-38 hours a week. It starts with a temporary contract for the duration of 18 months. When the assessment of your performance is deemed positive, the position will become permanent.

The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be €3,807 to €5,922 (scale 11-12) gross per month, based on a fulltime contract (38 hours a week). This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
