Functieomschrijving

QuSoft and The Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI) of the University of Amsterdam invite you to apply for a PhD position in Quantum Algorithms.

You will conduct research in the theory and design of quantum algorithms for optimization problems, both continuous and discrete, including NP optimization. This line of research includes both long-term and NISQ algorithmic theory and design, with a special focus on applications to use cases motivated by industry problems. The ideal candidate has a background in the theory of quantum computing, with a strong foundation in mathematics and/or theoretical computer science.

You will be jointly supervised by Stacey Jeffery (CWI) and Michael Walter (University of Amsterdam). You will be employed by the Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam, but will also be a member of QuSoft, a vibrant and interdisciplinary research institute hosted by CWI, and as such, will share an office with other QuSoft students at CWI.

What are you going to do?

You will:

  • perform research on Quantum Algorithms;
  • be part of the research center QuSoft and interact with its senior and junior members;
  • attend relevant international conferences and present your work to the wider quantum community;
  • contribute to educational programs at the University of Amsterdam and outreach efforts of QuSoft.

Functie-eisen

What do we require?

  • A Master’s degree in Mathematics and/or Computer Science (or equivalent);
  • an excellent academic track record;
  • excellent writing and communication skills in English;
  • a formal background in quantum computing research is not required (although it’s a plus), but your research statement should reflect a demonstrated interest in quantum algorithms.

Conditions

Our offer

A temporary contract for 38 hours per week for the duration of 4 years (the initial contract will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it will be extended for a total duration of 4 years). This should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). We will draft an educational plan that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. The starting date should be no later than 1 September 2021, but is negotiable.

The salary will be €2,395 to €3,061 (scale P) gross per month, based on a full-time contract of 38 hours a week. This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
