The Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) has two positions for postdoctoral researchers to join challenging projects in collaboration with local high-tech companies.

Position I: Development of heterogeneous catalysts for the selective alkylation of naphthalene and biphenyl, together with Rütgers Resins. The alkylated derivatives of naphthalene and related compounds are used for the manufacture of advanced polymers. In this project we will develop new solid catalysts for the efficient isopropylation of naphthalene and/or related arenes in a continuous reactor.

Position II: Combining graphene with metal oxide nanoparticles: towards the development of new coating materials, together with Tata Steel Netherlands. Anti-corrosive coatings ensure long life-time for metal parts. Some of the components of these coatings will have to be replaced in the near future by more environmentally friendly alternatives. In this project, we will develop new anticorrosive coatings based on a combination of graphene and common metal oxides.

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic researchers with a PhD degree in chemistry/chemical engineering. For position II, researchers with a PhD degree in materials science can also apply. You should be fluent in written and spoken English and should be able to work independently as well as in a team. For position I, you should have previous experience in catalyst synthesis, characterization and testing as well as experience in working with high pressure batch/flow reactors and analytical techniques such as GC and HPLC. For position II, experience in graphene chemistry is needed.

Both positions are available starting preferably from 1 September 2018, or earlier in case the candidate is available. The appointments will be on a temporary base. For both positions, the appointment will be for 1 year, with a possible extension of 1.5 year (depending on the researchers performance and the funding of the second stage of the project). The salary will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel, and will range from €2,588 to €4,084 (scale 10). This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% annual bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.

With over 5,000 employees, 30,000 students and a budget of more than 600 million euros, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is an intellectual hub within the Netherlands. Teaching and research at the UvA are conducted within seven faculties: Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Economics and Business, Law, Science, Medicine and Dentistry. Housed on four city campuses in or near the heart of Amsterdam, where disciplines come together and interact, the faculties have close links with thousands of researchers and hundreds of institutions at home and abroad.

The UvA’s students and employees are independent thinkers, competent rebels who dare to question dogmas and aren’t satisfied with easy answers and standard solutions. To work at the UvA is to work in an independent, creative, innovative and international climate characterised by an open atmosphere and a genuine engagement with the city of Amsterdam and society.

Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences

The Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is one of eight institutes of the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). HIMS performs internationally recognized chemistry and molecular research, curiosity driven as well as application driven. This is done in close cooperation with the chemical, flavour & food, medical and high-tech industries. Research is organised into four themes: Sustainable Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry and Molecular Photonics.

The group Heterogeneous Catalysis and Sustainable Chemistry is part of the Sustainable Chemistry theme of HIMS and the Sustainable Chemistry Research Priority Area of the UvA. The general aim of the group is to discover new catalysts and materials for sustainable chemistry and energy applications, and have lots of fun meanwhile.
