The PhD position is part of the project CERTIF-AI (Certification of production process quality through Artificial Intelligence). This project involves three academic partners and eight industrial partners. The PhD will be performed at the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in close collaboration with Tilburg University and Eindhoven University of Technology.

Functieomschrijving

PhD role:
The overall purpose of the research carried by the PhD candidate is to create models of data generated by machines in a production process. Such models then should allow to generate an extensive collection of sensor data, including rare extreme events, and develop tools to understand and explain the sensor data. The PhD candidate should address the questions: How can Generative Models be successfully applied to the domain of Smart Industries?
How can Generative Models be used to simulate data from production processes?
How can the explainability be achieved with such models, and how can it be realized for Smart Industry applications?

This exciting research topic allows for a great deal of freedom to address the problem and research on Generative Models.

The main tasks of this PhD position include:

  • Develop innovative methods accessible for all partners involved;
  • Perform scientific research in relevant domains;
  • Be in close contact with all partners;
  • Present results at established (international) conferences;
  • Publish results in top scientific journals;
  • Participate in joint activities with the project partners.

Functie-eisen

We are looking for candidates that meet the following criteria:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field - e.g. Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Engineering, Cognitive Science.
  • Good knowledge of the theory and application of machine learning, particularly deep learning - demonstrable experience with deep generative models is a plus.
  • Well-developed programming skills - experience with deep learning frameworks is expected.
  • Good communicative skills in English, both in speaking and in writing.

Conditions

The PhD candidate will be employed at Tilburg University. We offer:

  • A full-time position.
  • The selected candidate will start with a contract for one year. Upon a positive outcome of the first-year evaluation, the candidate will be offered an employment contract for the remaining three years.
  • A minimum gross salary of € 2.325 per month up to a maximum of € 2.972 in the fourth year;
  • A holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (annually);
  • Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary (the 30% tax regulation). The University will apply for such an allowance on their behalf;

Context:
The large amounts of data generated by machines in a production process can be used to certify that a production process leads to quality products and, when this is not the case, diagnose the problems. In particular, these data streams can be mined to build a model of the production process as it was executed instead of how it was envisioned. Such a model can subsequently be analyzed and stress-tested to explore possible causes of production problems and analyze what-if scenarios. That is especially crucial in mass customization processes where each product may be unique and can only feasibly be tested using a model and data-driven techniques like machine learning.

To address this problem, in the CERTIF-AI project, a toolkit will be developed that consists of techniques from the areas of data science, artificial intelligence, and operations research. The toolkit is considered to become applicable as the project runs, by implementing and using it at partner organizations to certify production processes and diagnose production problems. So, results from the research carried as part of this PhD will be further developed to be tested in partner companies and will have a visible and immediate impact on the toolkit production.
