As an Assistant Professor you will join the staff of the English Language and Culture (ELC) section. ELC, in which the language of instruction is English, is part of the department of Modern Languages and Cultures in the Faculty of Arts. You will be expected to participate in the Faculty’s teaching at all levels: you will be teaching BA and MA courses in linguistics and English language skills, supervise BA and MA theses, supervise PhD candidates in areas of your specialisation, participate in educational support activities such as mentoring, and actively contribute to curriculum development. You will be closely involved in the development of the English Language and Culture BA programme and assist in shaping its future direction.

You are a productive and active researcher who conducts empirical research on language variation with a focus on English and publishes in international high impact journals. Your research will centre around either spoken or written English and will be embedded in the Radboud Centre for Language Studies (CLS). You will be expected to seek external funding and be active in suitable public engagement activities. You should be willing to collaborate with other academic staff in research activities and participate in committees and/or project groups within ELC, CLS, or the Faculty. The position involves 40% research and 60% teaching.

  • You should hold a PhD degree in English linguistics.
  • Your research focuses on language variation and is either experiment- or corpus-based (or both).
  • You have a track record of scholarly publications commensurate with your career stage.
  • You have an international network of contacts in academia and the ambition to fulfil a leadership position in your field.
  • You are willing to play an active role within CLS.
  • You have demonstrable experience in university-level teaching of linguistics.
  • You have demonstrable administrative and organisational skills.
  • You have a formal university teaching qualification (UTQ/BKO, or equivalent) or are committed to obtaining one within two years.
  • English is your native language, or you speak English at near-native level. If you are not Dutch-speaking, you will be expected to acquire a good command of Dutch within two years.

The Faculty of Arts is committed to knowledge production with a significant scientific and social impact. With over 500 academic and support staff, we teach and conduct research in the fields of history and art, languages and cultures, and linguistics and communication, using innovative methodologies and working in close collaboration between the disciplines. Our research is embedded in two research institutes: the Centre for Language Studies (CLS) and the Radboud Institute for Culture & History (RICH). We currently have approximatively 2,500 students, enrolled in three departments: the Department of History, Art History and Classics, the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, and the Department of Language and Communication. Arbeidsvoorwaarden

  • It concerns an employment for 1.0 FTE.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €3,974 and a maximum of €6,181 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 11 or 12).
  • You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • It concerns a temporary employment for 1.5 years with the prospect of a permanent position after positive evaluation at 1 year.
